Professional painters in Berlin are a small, precarious creative community embedded in one of Europe's most prominent art capitals, typically self-employed and earning far below average wages. A survey of over 1,000 professional creatives in Berlin found average income from artistic work was just €9,600 per year, with half earning less than €5,000 annually, and many facing poverty in old age. Financial insecurity is acute: a majority of Berlin artists reported being worried they could not pay rent during the COVID-19 crisis, underscoring the structural vulnerability of this group.
