# **How to Do Market Research Without Money**

Market research on a zero budget in 2026: AI panels at 5 EUR per month, free survey tools, public-data analysis, and the three free tactics that actually beat agency reports.

# How to Do Market Research Without Money

The reason "we cannot afford research" is the most expensive line in marketing. Real market research at zero or near-zero cost is a 2026 capability. Here is the stack.

## Layer 1: Free public-data research

You are sitting on free research already. Reddit threads in your category, G2 and App Store reviews of competitors, Twitter and LinkedIn conversations about your problem space, customer-service tickets in your own helpdesk. All public. All real-buyer language.

The exercise: pick 3 competitors, read 50 reviews each, look for the same complaint appearing 5 or more times. That is a real pattern, free.

Add Google Trends, Answer the Public (free tier), and Glimpse for category demand signals. Total cost: zero. Total time: 4 to 6 hours.

## Layer 2: Free or near-free surveys

Tally is free for unlimited responses. Typeform free tier covers 100 responses per month. Google Forms is free forever. The tool is not the bottleneck. Distribution is.

Free distribution channels: your newsletter, your LinkedIn post, your customer-success email signature, a relevant subreddit (transparently disclose), a Slack or Discord community where you are an active member, a small payment to Prolific or Pollfish for under 100 responses (about 100 to 150 EUR for a quality sample).

## Layer 3: AI panels (the 5 EUR layer)

A Minds Lite plan at 5 EUR per month gives you unlimited panel runs. You build a Mind for your target buyer, ask the same 5 to 10 questions you would have asked in 50 customer interviews, and get back 80 to 95 percent accuracy against historical human research data.

This is not theoretical. In 2026, AI panels are the right answer for: positioning checks, message testing, ad copy review, competitive perception, naming reactions, value-proposition stress-testing.

What AI panels are still not: a substitute for real numerical sizing (use surveys for that) or for regulated research (FDA filings, financial-services compliance).

## Layer 4: Customer interviews (your own customers)

Email 5 existing customers. Ask for 20 minutes. Most accept. This is the cheapest customer-interview workflow on Earth, and it produces more usable insight than any agency report.

Free, not effortless. Budget 5 hours of your week for the calls and 2 hours for synthesis.

## The combined zero-budget workflow

Week 1: read 50 Reddit and review threads, run a Minds panel on the 3 sharpest questions, draft a 1-page hypothesis memo.

Week 2: ship a 10-question Tally survey to your audience or a small paid Prolific sample, schedule 5 customer interviews.

Week 3: synthesis, decision.

Total cost: under 200 EUR including the AI panel subscription and a small paid survey sample. Total time: 3 weeks of part-time effort.

The equivalent agency report costs 25,000 to 75,000 EUR and takes 8 to 12 weeks.
