# Smart Home Privacy Concerns Study, UK 2026

## Methodology

This study draws on a simulated panel of **52 UK smart-home owners** with one or more connected devices, across all UK nations and age bands 25-55+. Each respondent is a Minds persona calibrated against historical UK IoT-adoption data, household-tech-spend patterns and regional connectivity baselines. Accuracy against held-out human responses validates at 80-95% on the underlying consumer-attitude prompts.

The full unlocked study includes 13 cross-tab statistics by device count, region and age band, downloadable charts, the raw response CSV, and unrestricted follow-up question access to the panel.

## The stated-concern level is low, but the qualifier is large

Asked to score, on a 0-10 scale, their concern about smart-home data collection, the panel averages 0.8/10. 87% sit at 3 or below; only 4% sit at 7 or above. Taken at face value, the cohort is relaxed about smart-home privacy. The qualifier in the open-text reasoning is the more revealing finding.

Respondents do not say "I am not concerned." They say "I am concerned in the abstract and I have made a calculated trade." The calculation almost always favours utility: a doorbell that lets a parent screen deliveries during a hospital appointment, a heating system that pays for itself in two winters, a security camera that captures a real burglary. The privacy concern is real but it is consistently outranked by a concrete-utility argument the respondent already finalised.

Rationally, the concern should be higher, six Echos, bedroom included, a Ring on the front door, all of it piped through Amazon's servers. I know that. But here's the blocker: the risk is abstract and the efficiency gain is concrete and measurable. I've shaved real time off the morning routine. The kids actually get to the door when Alexa announces

## **Frequently asked questions**### **How concerned are you that your smart home devices are recording or transmitting data you do not know about? Scale 0 (not at all) to 10 (very concerned).** Across this 52-respondent simulated Minds panel, 4% scored a 7 or higher on the question of are highly concerned about smart home data collection (mean 0.8 on a 0-10 scale). 87% scored 3 or lower, indicating a polarised rather than gradual distribution. ### **Have you ever unplugged or muted a smart speaker because you felt uneasy about it?** In this 52-respondent simulated Minds panel, 65% answered YES to the question of whether they have unplugged smart speaker over privacy unease, while 35% answered NO. Open-text reasoning from respondents shows the headline number understates the variability within each answer group. ### **Would you pay 50% more for a smart home device from a brand that guaranteed no cloud data storage?** 79% of the 52-respondent simulated Minds panel selected DEPENDS as their primary stance on whether they would pay 50% premium for no-cloud privacy. The remaining answers split between NO (21%), with open-text reasoning showing the choice often hinges on a specific contextual variable. ### **How was this Minds simulated panel calibrated?** The 52-respondent panel was assembled by Minds from grounded persona briefs targeting smart home owners in the UK region. Each persona is calibrated against historical demographic and behavioural data and validates at 80-95% accuracy against held-out human responses on category-specific prompts. ### **How can I run a similar Minds study for my own category?** Sign up free at getminds.ai, brief a panel in plain English describing the audience you want to hear from, and ask up to three questions to the simulated cohort. Results return in minutes, not weeks, and the full unlocked study includes cross-tabs by every demographic dimension you defined. ## **About Minds** Minds is an AI research lab building synthetic focus groups and studies.
