Methodology

This study draws on a simulated panel of 52 UK smart-home owners with one or more connected devices, across all UK nations and age bands 25-55+. Each respondent is a Minds persona calibrated against historical UK IoT-adoption data, household-tech-spend patterns and regional connectivity baselines. Accuracy against held-out human responses validates at 80-95% on the underlying consumer-attitude prompts.

The stated-concern level is low, but the qualifier is large

Asked to score, on a 0-10 scale, their concern about smart-home data collection, the panel averages 0.8/10. 87% sit at 3 or below; only 4% sit at 7 or above. Taken at face value, the cohort is relaxed about smart-home privacy. The qualifier in the open-text reasoning is the more revealing finding.

Respondents do not say "I am not concerned." They say "I am concerned in the abstract and I have made a calculated trade." The calculation almost always favours utility: a doorbell that lets a parent screen deliveries during a hospital appointment, a heating system that pays for itself in two winters, a security camera that captures a real burglary. The privacy concern is real but it is consistently outranked by a concrete-utility argument the respondent already finalised.

Unplugging behaviour is a much more honest signal

Despite the low stated-concern score, 65% of the panel report having unplugged or muted a smart speaker at least once specifically because of a moment of privacy unease. This is the behaviour that does not show up in survey scales: the small, private, defensive act that respondents take when a context, a sensitive phone call, a tense family conversation, a moment of vulnerability, crosses the implicit line they have drawn for themselves.

The behaviour-vs-attitude gap is the interesting one. Respondents who scored their concern at 0/10 are well-represented among the unpluggers. The contradiction is not contradictory to them: their default position is comfortable, but their threshold for episodic defensive action is much lower than the survey scale suggests. Manufacturer disclosure design should optimise for the unplugging-rate metric, not the stated-concern metric.

Asked whether they would pay 50% more for a smart-home device from a brand that guaranteed no cloud data storage, 79% answer "depends" and 21% answer "no". The "depends" answer resolves consistently on two conditions: the word "guaranteed" has to mean something technically auditable, and the device category has to be one where cloud features are not the core utility.

For the always-listening category, smart speakers, voice assistants, the "depends" leans toward yes: respondents see local-only processing as a genuine upgrade. For the cloud-dependent category, video doorbells with off-site clip backup, multi-property control hubs, the same respondents lean toward no: the cloud is the feature they bought, and a no-cloud version is functionally a different product, not a more private one.

What this means for smart-home brands and regulators

  • The stated-concern survey is the wrong KPI. A 0.8/10 average concern with a 65% unplugging rate tells you the cohort has compartmentalised. Brands that design for the unplugging moment (visible mute, clear LED, easy unplug) win trust the privacy-policy paragraph never reaches.
  • "No cloud" is a category-specific premium, not a brand-wide one. A no-cloud line in the always-listening category captures real share at a 30-50% premium. A no-cloud line in the cloud-feature category loses on capability before privacy enters the conversation.
  • Verification beats marketing. The "depends" answers all collapse to "depends on whether I can verify the claim." External audit, open firmware, independent traffic analysis, these convert at a far higher rate than a brand-led privacy promise. The brands that pursue actual certification will own the segment.
